Seminar 4 - Cultural Awareness

Seminar 4 - Cultural Awareness

Farmington, NM

New Mexico is a beautiful state, from the sights to the culture there is always something new to learn from our state. We visited Farmington, NM for this past seminar, while there we focused on cultural awareness in and around the Navajo Nation.
As of May 2021 it was determined that the Navajo Nation is now the largest tribe in the United States just out numbering the Cherokee Nation who formerly held the title. The Farmington community is highly diverse, and it was intriguing to me to learn that the businesses in the area have a hiring program that helps the Native people. This means that a Native individual is a preferred hire, and that a Native owned business is more likely to win the contract over a non-Native individual. With this program in place it incentivizes Native individuals to get out in the community for work.
I found our time in Farmington, NM quite interesting and felt I walked away with a greater understanding of the Northwestern region of New Mexico. Unfortunately we were unable to visit the NAPI farm due to COVID restrictions, but while driving through the farm on our way to other locations we were able to see a small portion of it. Our other site visits consisted of a coal mine and PESCO (Petroleum Equipment Service Company) to name a couple. These two visits stood out to me because I had never experienced anything like them before.
It was my goal from the start of this program to learn something new with each visit, and I can say this was the case for Seminar #4!
