Seminar 3 - Leadership Discovery

Seminar 3: Oil and Agricultural

in Southeastern New Mexico

The agriculture industry in New Mexico is highly diverse; we have variation in water availability, soil makeup, climate, agriculture resources, and much more across the state. This gives New Mexico a very unique advantage for education and understanding numerous agriculture related industries. Southeastern New Mexico specifically does not have near as much water as other areas in the state and is made up of a variation of soil types like Sandy Loam and Pima Silt Loam. One of the main resources found in the Southeastern parts of New Mexico is Oil & Gas, this industry contributes billions of dollars in revenue each year to the state.

Our visit to the Southeastern side of New Mexico for seminar 3 was an eye opening adventure, with topics that were informative and exciting to learn about. I have always been intrigued by the oil and gas industry, knowing that it was vital to our state and country but that was all. Between Mr. Brewer and Mr. Burnett we were able to have an open discussion on how the oil & gas industry works from point "A" to "B". You always here the BAD when it comes to the process of harvesting oil & gas, but when you listen to the experts the truth comes out. With the amount of regulations that must be followed there is very little room for error, and due to the cost/fees one will occur from making a mistake companies cannot afford the hit!

My goal for this program was to expand my knowledge into the agriculture industries here in New Mexico. After our visit to the Southeastern side of the state that has definitely been the case. I look forward to taking what I have learned into the future when visiting with borrowers and my peers. With our next seminar coming up quick I can't wait to see what more our state has to offer!
